The three elements of p ≡ Lq, the strict implication of q by p.
The definition of strict implication to be found in John Lyons' Semantics must be drastically criticized.
p ⇒ q symbolizing the strict implication of q by p in Semantics 1 cannot be identified with ~ M (p & ~q), that is, It is im-possible to have together the fact p and the fact not-q.
p ⇒ q has the sense of p ≡ Lq, that is, the fact p is equivalent to Lq, certainty of the fact q.
The expression ~ M (p & ~q) represents just one of the three elements composing strict implication. To symbolize strict implication, John Lyons employs p ⇒ q, JF Monteil p ≡ Lq.
The developped form of p ≡ Lq is (p & Lq) w (~p & M~q) , to be read thus, One of two things, either one has the fact p and then the certainty of the fact q, or one has the fact not-p and then the possibility of the fact not-q.
Thanks to (p & Lq) w (~p & M~q), it is easy to find out the three ingredients of strict implication :
1- ~ M (p & ~q), 2- Mp, 3- ~p. M → M~q
1- ~ M (p & ~q) says that it is im-possible to have together p and not-q.
2- Mp says that p is possible and therefore indicates that ~ M (p & ~q) does not result from ~Mp, im-possibility of p.
3- ~p. M → M~q means, we shall see, that the fact not-p is in-compatible with the fact Lq but is compatible with a fact q which is not certain, such a q being symbolized by q. M.
Our papers show that to define the strict implication p ⇒ q by saying that it is equivalent to ~ M (p & ~q) is clearly inappropriate and deficient in that the impossibility to have both the fact p and the fact not-q may result from the fact that p is im-possible and not from the fact that p is the cause of its effect q. Hence the necessity of adding Mp to ~ M (p & ~q).
But if the first two ingredients of ~ M (p & ~q) & Mp are necessary, they are not sufficient.
One must add: ~p. M → M~q, the third element, to obtain the content of strict implication of q by p.
I- Associated with ~ M (p & ~q), the second ingredient Mp eliminates happily the direful spectre of ~Mp im-possibility of p, that is, L~p certainty of not-p.
II- Associated with the conjunction ~ M (p & ~q) & Mp, the expression: ~p. M → M~q eliminates another state of things incompatible with p ≡ Lq, namely, Lq & Mp.
Lq & Mp implies ~ M (p & ~q) & Mp as p ≡ Lq does.
p ≡ Lq contains 3 elements:~ M (p & ~q), Mp, ~p. M → M~q
p ≡ Lq, c'est la conjonction de trois éléments: ~ M (p & ~q) & Mp & ~p. M → M~q
To be able to say that a fact p is the cause of a fact q, it is evident that the fact p must be deemed to be possible. How could we establish that p has an effect q if p is said to be im-possible from the start ? It is no less clear that if the fact q is certain in any case, whether p is the case or not-p is the case, it is absolutely im-possible to imagine that the fact q is the effect resulting from the fact p exclusively.
